Football memorabilia
Football is probably the most popular sport in the world today. Even people who aren’t that interested in football will often watch the odd big game. People that love football really love it and that’s why football memorabilia is so popular. Football-obsessives just can’t get enough of the beautiful game and the items of sports memorabilia that go with it!
Football memorabilia refers to all sorts of items relating to the world of football, past and present. Some items of football memorabilia are extremely rare and collectable. Other pieces of football memorabilia are easy to come by and are enjoyed and collected by a wide range of football fans just for fun. Collectable football memorabilia can sell for quite high prices on the other hand.
Football memorabilia items
Examples of items of football memorabilia include:
• Programmes and football magazines. Old football programmes can be very collectable, especially if they are from significant matches.
• Football cards and stickers. Some players or card editions are more collectable than others. Sometimes a fan just wants to complete their own personal collection.
• Badges
• Key-rings
• Football shirts. Shirts which have been worn and/or signed by players are obviously the most in demand. There has also recently been a fashion for retro football shirts.
• Pictures and posters
• Scarves, hats, sunglasses and T-shirts. Some fans want to wear an item of football memorabilia every single day and in all weathers!
• Books and videos. Not content with watching football matches, some people still want more and there is a wide market of football books and videos covering everything from football history to technique.
• Miscellaneous items. Loads of unusual football memorabilia has been released over the years. For collectors, the more unusual the better! Odd examples include chocolate bars, combs, stationery, mobile phone charms and busts.
Why football memorabilia?
A true football fan wouldn’t ask this question! All sorts of buyers are interested in football memorabilia though. Hardcore fans may buy football memorabilia to decorate their homes or as a reminder of a particularly good match. Some people get an item of memorabilia from every match!
Football memorabilia is also popular as a present.
Football memorabilia mania
Some people collect football memorabilia for a bit of fun. Other people take football memorabilia pretty seriously. In 2006, a buyer paid £24,000 for George Best’s old football shirt from the 1970 FA cup fifth round.
When Wayne Rooney’s house was burgled many expensive gadgets and items were ignored in favour of nabbing Wayne’s cup final shirt and England caps.
It goes to show that the most popular and sought-after memorabilia is items that are connected to a particular football player.
Top football memorabilia items
• Pele’s football shirt from the 1970 World Cup final went for a whopping £157,000
• The infamous ball which David Beckham kicked and missed a penalty in Euro 2004 fetched £18,700.

• Autographed items
